Whitney: Lesson learned

So in Berlin, you have to deposit a one euro coin in order to use a shopping cart at the grocery store (because apparently otherwise people steal them…), so I usually just use a basket instead. It’s more common to get groceries every few days here than to stock up for a few weeks the way I always did in Minneapolis, so I generally only buy a bag’s worth of groceries each trip. Today I decided to broaden my horizons and try out a grocery cart, and I don’t think I’ll ever make that mistake again. I bought twice as much as I normally do because I wasn’t limited to only buying what could fit in a basket, and carrying it the half-mile and 72 stair-steps to my apartment was not a fun task to complete.

Whitney: Flohmarkt am Mauerpark

Today I visited “Flohmarkt am Mauerpark” with Lucy. Whitney: First day of orientation

Today was my first day of orientation at Freie Universität Berlin. The orientation days are only for exchange students, so I felt confident in the fact that I’d be able to cling to a few fellow Americans if I felt overwhelmed or confused. I was amazingly mistaken, because I didn’t meet a single American all day long. It seemed (based on my snooping over people’s shoulders to see there papers) that every other nationality was thoroughly represented aside from American. Whitney: ein Fußballspiel (a soccer game)

Tonight I was lucky enough to go to ein Fußballspiel (a soccer game) here in Berlin. It was very intense! Hertha (the Berlin team) scored three times in the first half, and each time they scored the crowd yelled cheers in unison and made SOO much noise! It was a fantastic atmosphere and because the game was in the evening, we saw a beautiful sunset during the game. Es war die schönsten Nacht!

Whitney: Home sweet home…finally!

After a 2.5 hour car ride to Chicago, an 8 hour flight to London, an 11.5 hour layover, and an hour and a half long flight to Berlin, I am finally in my new home!
