Our traditional Maori Haka dance, as mentioned in a previous post (I am in the front, making weird faces.)

DAY 3: A day of firsts for me. In the early morning, some friends and I walked through Rotorua and found a beautiful lake. When we returned to the hostel, we were able to go on our chosen activities for Adventure Day. For my trip, I choose to go whitewater rafting. The river, Kaituna, was used as a burial ground for Maori chiefs a long time ago. It is also graded a 5 in rafting levels, which is very high. So, it was a very intense trip for me, mostly [...]

I’ve been in New Zealand for only two days, but I already know that I will love it here. The plane ride from Los Angeles was not as bad as expected. Flying solo is definitely different than flying with others, but I made it to NZ in one piece. It took about 13 hours, and I slept for about 2 of them. Thankfully, upon arrival in Auckland, it was a beautiful sunny day, which helped me forget my exhaustion and jet lag and get excited about exploring the country. After [...]

I have my first test tomorrow! It’s for my ENGL112 class: Literature and Theatre of Aotearoa. I will either be writing on the play we read, and what remains, by Miria George or one of the many poems we read by Hone Tuwhare. I think I will probably write about and what remains because I don’t do so well with poems. At least with the play there is a story line with a theme that I can recognize. Poetry is often beyond me, although some of it is very interesting [...]

This is my last week in Mombasa so I’ve just been finishing up some stuff at work. Mostly just working on my presentation and final report that I have to turn in. I also made dinner for my family yesterday – my original plan was to make burritos. However, when I went to the store, I was banking on them having chapati (to use instead of tortilla shells), but they did not. And then I didn’t want to depend on a street vendor having them outside my house, so I [...]

We have a grocery type store thing that we can go to, and I looked around it yesterday to see what they all had. They have pretty normal ingredients, but I don’t think I’ll be able to find anything weird. We looked at the cheeses yesterday…we found some “cheddar” cheese that was salmon colored. Don’t think I’ll be buying that anytime soon. So as I was talking to Kayla yesterday, I was telling her about some interesting things that I do on a daily basis/or things that we do here [...]

I'm a junior at the U who loves the outdoors and the ocean. In NZ, I hope to be able to surf, climb mountains, and feel the sunshine almost everyday. I do not have a strong idea of what I want to do after college, but I hope I might discover something about myself while in NZ that could help guide me later in life. I am very ambitious and am extremely excited to be able to travel in the country of NZ, as I love traveling and nature. → Click here to read more posts by
