Today we had our visit to St. Thomas hospital to visit our instructor Dr. Msuya and to see where he practices. St. Thomas hospital is a privately owned hospital in Arusha and they see approximately 80-100 patients a day. When we arrived to the hospital at 10:00 am, the waiting room was already packed full of patients waiting to see Dr. Msuya. He is an OB/GYN and serves a good majority of the pregnant women in Arusha. We were given a tour of the facilites by one of the workers [...]

So I’ve finally been able to write in my blog (Google cancelled my account because apparently trying to access my account in Tanzania is suspicious). Today is my second full day at MS-TCDC that is the college where we will be taking classes. The flights to Tanzania were pretty brutal, but they went by faster than I thought. We arrived in Tanzania at 8:30 p.m. their time and were driven to the college by our coordinator Steven Ndosi. On Monday we had our first day of orientation where we heard [...]

On Friday we only had 2 classes, and we got out really early from the second one, so we the four of us went to Uchumi to get a few more groceries and some lunch before we started the trip to Mt. Longonot. We headed out and waited for a bus to take us into town to get on a matatu to take us to Longonot. Our friend Ruehl, who helped us last weekend with Hell’s Gate must have seen us waiting by the bus stop and he came over [...]

Ten of us left for Hell’s Gate on Friday after classes. We were supposed to be picked up at 2pm at school, but the matatu did not get there until 4:30. Yes, 4:30. That is even beyond “Kenyan time.” I was pissed. We were supposed to get to the park and have an hour long safari ride and then set up camp and go to town for dinner. Well, none of that worked out. We didn’t even get out of Nairobi until 5:30. We finally reached Hell’s Gate around 7:30, [...]

We finally arrived! We got out to stretch our legs, and right away there were baboons coming right up to the bus. One little guy even climbed up the ladder, got into someone’s luggage and grabbed a muffin! There was a ton of them everywhere. We then got our access into the park, and started driving to our hostel. Along the way we saw more baboons, zebras, gazelles, and….two lions!! A male and female were just laying alongside the road so we stopped to get pictures and check them out [...]

Hi my name is Erin Wynings, and I am studying to enter medical school and to one day become a pediatrician. I hope to gain cultural insight from my global experience and to appreciate medicine in Tanzania. This will be my first time outside of the country, and I am so excited to be a part of this program. → Click here to read more posts by
