Katie: Chilean cooking class

Yesterday (Friday) I had a cooking class with one of the teachers from the International Center, Christian. Emily, Mari, Kenya, Ryan and Greg all came too! We made pebre, which is a Chilean salsa. It was delicious. It has garlic, tomatoes, onion, parsley, chile, olive oil and salt. It was really delicious! We also bought sopaipillas from a bakery and topped our sopaipillas with the pebre, it was sooo good. In Chile, traditionally when it rains people eat sopaipillas, it is like Chilean comfort food. They are fried thick tortillas made with pumpkin and some other things and then it is fried. They also make sweet versions where they will fry it in chancaca, which is a weird sugar sauce creation. We also made vino navegado, which is made with sliced oranges, cloves, cinnamon sticks, sugar, and red wine. Then it is all heated up in a pot, it is sooo good! I was soo full! It was really fun learning how to make some traditional Chilean foods.
Here is a picture of the sopaipilla with pebre and the vino navegado:

Later that night Christine, Emily, Ryan, Greg and I went out to some of the bars here in Viña. We went to Spazio Budnyk and Locos Viña. It was fun! I tried a Primavera, which was basically a smoothie. It tasted like juice, haha. Both bars were fun, lots of music and lots of people smoking WAY too much. I definitely miss the smoke free bars in MN. All of my clothes reek of cigarettes now. At Loco Viña  there was this guy that I think they paid to sing karaoke because he wouldn’t stop and he kept improving little things between the songs like they were his songs and he somehow knew something about them. It was pretty funny. But, it was fun experiencing some of the nightlife here in Viña.
