Patricia: New friend at work

I have a new friend at work. It is a lost bird that has been staying with us for the past week. It is a galah which is native to Australia. Like I mentioned before, the birds and wildlife are so interesting here.

It is a very pretty bird that happens to hate everybody on staff except me. The bird will not bite me and it will find a cozy spot on my scarf to stand on while it nuzzles my neck. I usually do not like birds. Having a particularly bad experience with a Macaw, I had always avoided any interaction with another bird. However, I think this little guy has removed my fear.

Apparently, one can tell the sex of the bird by its eyes. Males have brown irises while females have pink irises. This little guy also has a broken wing, but no found owner to do anything about it.

If I could bring any animal home, this little guy would be it. Unfortunately I know that the quarantine process would be heaps difficult and expensive. Plus, convincing my parents to have another animal in the house would probably be an even bigger struggle.

Apparently-because I did some hypothetical research- in order to move a bird internationally, one needs sto check if it is listed on Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and see what level of endangered it is at. One also needs all of the information about the bird and give it a microchip for identification. It will also be difficult to transport the bird. It will need a good carry cage and the shortest airplane ride possible.

Right now I will enjoy this little galah for the rest of my stay and contemplate owning one in the future. I am currently trying to teach him how to say “Hello, Trish”.
