Reading Week Adventure Pt IV: Salzburg, Austria

Right away I could tell there was a different air to this city, I liked it. I could tell this was going to be a fun stop, and was glad that we were taking two days here. After a confusing 5 min trying to get our directional bearings, we were soon at our hostel. It was a YoHo – youth hostel that played the sound of music nightly. So looking forward to this place! After getting to our room, settling in, and freshening up we headed out. First stop was […]

Reading Week Pt III: Zurich, Switzerland

As we stepped off of the train in Zurich, we were greeted by a gust of very cold wind. I was very happy I had picked up a winter jacket last week. No longer were we in an ocean tempered area of constant rain. We were definitely more north and on the colder side of the alps. Also on the German side of the alps. We got about half way here and the signs became German. Lots of ist and ich and the like. Our plan was first food, then […]

Reading Week Pt. 2: Bellinzona, Switzerland

We stepped off of the train and into the mountains. We were surrounded. It was amazing! Felt so good to be in the mountains again. It was pretty early, but we decided that we should see if we could at least drop our bags off at our hostel. Lugging around a heavy backpack and duffle isn’t a whole lot of fun… Saw some pretty neat sites on the way there, even though it did seem like a ghost town. Turned out that even though we arrived at the hostel just […]

Reading Week Pt. 1: Milan, Italy

After attempting to fall asleep early and failing, I was out of bed by 12:20am to catch the 1:10am bus to Dublin airport. This was it. We had the next week off, supposedly as a study week (reading week), but let’s be real here – there are way better ways to spend a week off in Europe, so how about hitting Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany? Yep. That’s the plan for the week! Jackie and I caught the 1am bus to the 6am flight to Bergamo Airport in Italy, and […]

Week 12

Week 12 was the last week of classes – woohoo! And it was also Thanksgiving. My first Thanksgiving not with my family. It was going to be very weird, especially not being in the States… I mean here, it was just a Thursday! I had class and everything! So weird… However all of my friends were going to put on a Friendsgiving, where the entrance fee was a dish to share and some holiday cheer! It was a great time. Mum made sure that we had a turkey, and I […]

Week 11

This week was pretty full of fun adventures! No rest after our Paris trip! On Tuesday, the USA was playing Ireland in a friendly soccer match, which my aunt kindly told me about a month ago, so I had gotten some friends, Jackie and Natalie, to come along with me! We ended up meeting up with some of Jackie’s roommates who had been in Barcelona and had stayed in Dublin the previous night to stay for the game for some pre-game fun at a pub, which was clearly rooting for […]

Week 10

Months before we even arrived in Ireland, Jackie had bought tickets to see a Minnesota band, Trampled by Turtles, in Paris. So we planned a trip to make it for the concert. The way flights worked out with classes and everything, we were only going to spend about 17 hours in the city, but we figured we could make it work! It was going to be Jackie, me, and our friends Liz, another Minnesota native, and Natalie. Four girls ready to take on Paris! Friday afternoon we hopped the bus […]

Week 7/8/9

Week 7 – After saying goodbye to the parents for a little while, it was back to the grind for me. An exam, design report and research paper were all looming near and so the week basically flew by in a whirl of doing homework. Soon it was Thursday – when Mum and Dad stopped back for the last time before flying home. We went out to eat at a little pub in Annacotty – they sure did love that little town…. All too soon it was time for them […]

Week 6

Week 6 – a.k.a. MY FAMILY IS COMING TO SEE ME!!!!! I was so excited! I didn’t really think that I would miss them as much as I had, I’ve actually gone longer without seeing them before, but boy did I miss them! So yeah, I was pretty dang excited for them to come visit! And as an extra bonus, I didn’t have class on Thursday or Friday because of something going on at the University. Or at least I thought we didn’t. Turns out we did, but I don’t […]

Week 5

Week 5. Or I could probably call it something to do with student groups because that’s basically all the cool things that happened to me this week, but we’ll stick with the system and continue numbering the weeks. Wednesday was the first activity the Engineering Society hosted. Jackie and I had signed up for the Engineering society just to see what it was (and because it was the cheapest society to join, so why not??). Anywho, Wednesday we met to create an FM transmitter. We were given this little plastic […]

Week 4

Hi lads! Sorry its been so long since I have updated you all on what has been going on over here, but school finally kicked up a bit so I’ve actually had like real work to do! There isn’t a whole lot of homework given here, its mostly just finals and then midterm essays and well I have been going through midterms for a couple weeks now – meaning lots of time writing, just not blogging! But anywho, so about week 4…. Not a whole lot went on during the […]

Week 3

So I am starting to feel at home here, or at least that its more normal that I am in a foreign country. I am starting to get used to the differences in food, way of speaking, and the way the weather changes all the time. It has been a bit of a learning curve, but I am definitely getting the hang of things. So that is a pretty great feeling. I would have to say that the most different thing is cooking. I am still struggling with the fact […]

Week 2

Week 2 finally brought on more of a rhythm. I finally had a class schedule figured out, or mostly figured out. Thankfully here students have a two week grace period to really get classes selected and figured out before they register. Makes things a little easier for us international students who really have no idea of what they are getting themselves into, like me! With a little monkeying around, I was able to figure out a way for me to only take two engineering classes and still almost graduate on […]

Fresher’s Week

So up until now, just about the only people on campus were international students, so I honestly hardly felt like I was really in whole different country. But the Sunday evening before classes started, the Irish arrived, and they arrived in force. When I woke up on Monday morning, the parking lots were full and there were people walking around everywhere, all with the most wonderful accents. Finally I was starting to feel like I was really in Ireland. Monday also brought the start of classes and the beginning of […]

Orientation Week

Wow. Its been quite the whirl wind of activity here since I stepped off of that bus. Full of Orientation events, boring speakers, tours, seeing campus, seeing the city, and meeting more people than I can honestly remember names… Oh and living for three days in the same pair of jeans, as that is how long it took Aer Lingus to return our luggage to us, but it really didn’t bother me too badly. So many new things to keep my mind on instead of that. I live in this […]
