Das Abenteuer fängt an!

The adventure begins! After a slow start at MSP Airport my travels went without a hitch or delay. The 8-hour transatlantic flight was actually rather pleasant, all things considered. One of the complementary movies one could watch on the plane was Mad Max: Fury Road, which I saw for the first time and enjoyed heartily. They were also very diligent with supplying us with food and drink, the former of which was surprisingly tasty and filling. The worst part by far was having to sit down without being able to […]

London Adventures – Jan 29

Happy Sunday everyone! This past week was pretty laid back for the most part. School was good! I love my classes which makes sitting in class a lot more tolerable. In all three years of being in college, I have never been late to a class… until this last Thursday. My roommate Josie and I were at the tube (subway) station and we got on the tube like we do every day, when we realized that we got on the tube that was going the opposite direction of where we […]

Great to be back in 日本

After a little more than 24 hours of traveling, I can gladly say that I safely made it to Hiroshima, Japan! Due to extreme turbulence, my flight from Toronto to Tokyo Haneda airport arrived later than expected which ended up giving me the great experience of trying to switch tickets in Japanese while being extremely jet-lagged. Luckily, the man behind the service counter was extremely helpful in trying to get me on the next plane. We hadn’t really run into any problems until he started asking me whether or not […]

A Weekend to Remember

I will be here for another 4 months but I think it will be very difficult to top my first weekend here. My mom came to visit me!! Out of pure luck she managed to go on a business trip to Switzerland the same week I moved myself to London. We spent each night she was in town getting yummy food and talking for hours, I have never felt so at home. We trolled around the Victoria & Albert Museum, I was able to show her my flat and introduce […]

MISES AU POINT BRÈVES

It’s been a little while since I’ve written, but again this is because so much has been happening! To start off, we’ve been visiting some pretty cool places for class: Sainte-Chapelle Palais du Louvre Institut des Cultures d’Islam Château Vincens So far one of my favorite aspects about my experience abroad are the field studies we do outside of the classroom during class time. Actually being able to visit and see works or buildings we are studying is not only helpful in being able to understand the material but also […]

The Rest of Rabat… Finally

Rabat, Saturday 9/20/14 An early breakfast on the roof of the hostel at 8:30 (although the clatter of crowds in the narrow streets below that had been going on for hours that morning indicated we were late to rise) included generous portions of a flaky, pancake-like break called Mallowi with butter and jam, assorted fruits, and a choice of orange juice, sweet mint tea, or coffee. Accompanying our sluggish, groggy-eyed party that morning was a quiet, blonde Australian woman who would be leaving soon and Abdel, who spent the allotted […]

Excursion to Madrid

Today was the first of 3 excursions with la fund. We took an hour long bus ride to and from madrid. We went on a guided tour of the palace, had a bus tour of the city, ate lunch at a buffet, then had 3 hours of free time to look around the city. Leandra and I wandered around the city, going from store to store checking out souvenirs and accessories. There were only a couple things that really stuck out for me: there were a ton of scarves and […]

Home Sweet Home!

Hey Everyone! I am back in Illinois! After a 14 hour hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles and then a 4 hour flight to Minneapolis, I stayed in Minnesota for the weekend to see some friends. Mom and Dad picked me up at the airport and stayed for the weekend in a hotel as well. Yesterday, we drove back through the storm, so it took us longer than our usual 6 hours. I am finally home though! Hopefully I won’t experience jet lag, but the time difference has been […]

Accepted to Grad School

So I officially got the notice from the U that I got accepted into grad school! Starting June 16th, I’ll finally start taking some education classes, rather than the tedious and unnecessarily difficult math classes I’ve been stuck with for the last few years. Of course this is all pending passing the three classes I”m taking over here, which is appearing to be a bit more of a chore than I had anticipated at the beginning of the semester. In any case I’ll have almost exactly 40 hours from the […]

Life As Usual

I have done so many things in the past week. I’ll give you a very quick rundown. I met my host mother’s family last weekend for a birthday (fødselsdag) lunch buffet. I went to a small fishing village with my Danish class called Drogør to learn about Danish Jews during WWII. I had two site visits on two separate days with my architecture history class to look at examples of cohousing and new-meets-old design in Copenhagen. (Left) My Danish class went to see the Royal Royal Ballet. My studio held […]

Bailey: Things Are Heatin’ Up

Two-for-one post today! But first, I’ll be catching you up on my Sydney life through pictures    The roommates: Sam, Julie and Rebekah in front of our favorite city landmarks! So lucky my roommates are so normal and lovely.  My apartment at the Meriton is probably the nicest place I will live for the next ten years of my life, the pictures do not do it justice. 1.17.2013   The morning began with me being incredibly confused. I was very ready to wake up in my bed in Blaine, MN, and […]

Sam: Arrival!

The past 48 hours can be summed up in to one word: WOW. What an experience this has already started off as! The flight from Minneapolis to Amsterdam was uneventful. Sleep wasn’t as easy to come by as I expected. I had more movie choices on the way over than I’ve seen in most movie stores! We landed in Amsterdam about an hour early, left there and landed in my home for the next three and a half months. The flight in and first couple hours here were almost an […]

Kara: Finally Here

If I lean a dangerous amount out my bedroom window, this is my view. It still hasn’t hit me yet that I’m going to be living in Rome, waking up to St. Peters every day. My brain is still in a fog from traveling for 24+ hours on nothing but airplane food and an hour of sleep. Getting to the apartment was crazy. It was raining, hard. While packing I remember thinking to myself “Hmm, do I need a rain jacket? Eh, no, I’ll probably be fine. I can tough […]

Kelli: The Countdown

I am leaving for France in 5 days!  It seems so surreal.  I have wanted to go to back to France ever since I got back from a trip to my pen pal’s house in Lyon 5 years ago.  There were times that I really didn’t think it was going to be possible.  But here I am, a few days out and I am still planning on boarding that plane. Lyon, France I know that this is the chance of a lifetime, and I plan on savoring every moment.  It […]
