Vive, Ríe, Ama, Chile

Here we are, exactly 6 weeks into my study abroad journey. I have decided that I am going to try to write every 3 weeks, that way I will have enough to say that is hopefully exciting but not so much that you will all be bored. When I write I try to have a few major themes in mind, which I will elaborate on, so this post is going to focus on adventure, anxiety, communication, and spring! These past 3 weeks have been full of adventure and exploration. A […]

Alexa: Exploring Valpo and Vina del Mar

The past 2 days have been busy! My new friends and I have been walking around a lot and discovering new places around the cities. Two days ago we went to “El Mall” and downtown Vina del Mar. We walked along the beach at night- it was so beautiful. I love the fact the this area is shaped like a horseshoe so I can see Valpo’s coastline from Vina and vice-versa. When we were walking we could look across and see Valpo all lit up and sparkling. Unfortunately, I didn’t […]

Alexa: Orientation and Classes

Yesterday was my first full day in Chile and also the orientation for my program. Matias and I walked to the metro station together so that I knew how to get there and how to use it. Since he and I go to the same school, we rode all the way together which was much easier than going alone. The metro ride (once you get out from underground) is really beautiful. It passes right alongside the ocean and you can see the coast of Valparaiso in front of you- so […]

Alexa: Arrival in Chile

Well, I was definitely not excited yesterday afternoon. Once I got to the Atlanta airport things started getting a little better. I ended up meeting one of the people from my program, Jackson, at our gate and it was nice to see a “familiar” face (we’ve been facebook friends for a week or two). After we boarded I heard two guys in front of me talking and we realized that we were all studying at the same university, so my class of 4 students doesn’t mean I won’t meet other […]

Katie: Rain & Valpo

It has been raining here for about three days now and when it rains in Chile it RAINS! The streets are literally filled with water. You can’t even see the road in front of my apartment right now. Just to walk down the sidewalk your shoes get soaked because there is just water everywhere. The wind is very strong as well, especially at night. Last night my windows and my door were shaking from the wind! In front of my apartment there are a bunch of bridges that go over […]

Samantha: It’s Almost Spring!

Winter is almost over!!! Spring starts September 21st and I cannot wait. The days are starting to get warmer, last week the temperature got over 75 degrees Fahrenheit! I am learning more and more Spanish and making more and more Chilean friends! Last weekend I traveled with my family to a summer house in the country! There we celebrated the birthday of three of their cousins who have birthdays in September. There is always an abundance of food which almost always includes grilled chicken and fresh vegetables. Their birthday cakes […]

Samantha: Day to Day

I have had almost all of my classes now and like them very much! Two are taught by instructors that specialize in Spanish as a second language. My writing class Professor explained to me that it is part of their culture to stare at people, so I have become accustomed to people looking at me. I am taking a Cognitive Psychology class, which I knew was going to be a challenge. I understand about 40% of what my professor says. After the first class I turned to the other exchange […]

Samantha: Chile!

I arrived in Chile on the 25th of July! My days have been full of getting to know my family, the cities of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar and my University! I live with a mom named Sandra, her husband Horacio and their three children, Camila (19), Javiera (17), and Matias (16). We live in a calm residential neighborhood called Miraflores from which I take a bus called a Micro to my University or other areas of Vina del Mar or Valparaiso. The people here drive very fast and seemingly […]
